The pocket watch was something very desired by the 19th century labourers, because they were permanently discussing with their bosses the time they were supposed to work and to be paid for. Therefore, the owner of a pocket watch was considered a very important person. Because a watch was very expensive at the time, the workers were collecting money together to buy a “common” watch . In 1896, the Ingersolls invented the first cheap watch for one dollar. They were rapidly awarded. One million watches were sold within one year.
